The bulky, full-sized Ford Expedition has always been an SUV with a classic "old school" feel. Far from the car-based crossovers popular with modern drivers for their easy handling and efficiency, the Expedition is an SUV built like a truck—with all the pros and cons that go with it.
Its body-on-frame chassis trades out the baby-soft ride and fuel economy of a unibody SUV for resilience over rugged off-road terrain and towing capability.
We can speculate that it's the Expedition's timeless appeal that left it languishing without a significant redesign for ten long years. Yet even classics need to be refreshed for the contemporary driver every now and then, and the new 2018 Expedition is finally giving us reason to get excited.
Technology has been updated with all Ford's latest top-shelf toys, including the pragmatic Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature, and the more playful SYNC 3 with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. For the first time, it will even offer a wireless charging pad.
The 2018 Expedition is also sporting a ton of updates to performance, including a more powerful engine, lighter body, new transmission, and now up to a 9,300-pound tow rating.
